sketches (2)

So, I’m having a go at drawing as part of my ‘create‘ theme. A couple of people mentioned that they got started by finding stuff they like and copying it.

Splendid idea. I found this picture on Instagram, by the fantastic New York-based photographer, @samhorine.

Part of me is reluctant to share as it’s a first attempt, but another part reckons that if I keep sharing my progress, I’m more likely to carry on!

As you can tell, I marked out the original into a grid to see if that helped with the composition. It seemed to help a bit!

These may turn into a semi-regular series on here…

    1. Thanks! I just look at it and see all that’s not right about it. Something I need to work on – both the getting better and getting better at letting myself off for not being UTTERLY BRILLIANT immediately. 🙂

  1. It’s wonderful! Great work! I’m very intimidated by the thought of drawing and I have convinced myself that I cannot draw from nothing. But one day I told myself “don’t try to think of something to draw, just LOOK at something and draw what you see.” When I put it that plainly, it was suddenly easy. I drew a lampost and trees through a window and I think it turned out fairly well before the friend I was waiting for arrived and I stopped. And so I did that one thing and never drew again, but the point, assuming I had one, is that the advice you were given is sound, and our experiences bear that out. One of us, at least, should keep going.

    1. I realised that that’s the sort of thing I want to be able to sketch/draw, so figured I might as well see how it turned out. Now I’m seeing all kinds of cool architecture around Leeds that I want to photograph and sketch!
