Leaving on a jet plane – top 5 travel destinations

Today’s prompt for Blog Every Day in November is ‘leaving on a jet plane’ – what’s on your travel wishlist?

I’ve only travelled outside the UK a few times – France with school, Ireland on a cycling holiday, California once, then France again last summer. We’ve mainly stuck to holidays within the UK – Cornwall is a firm family favourite (though such a long way from Yorkshire!), as is Scotland.

There are a ton of other places I’d love to visit though. Here, in no particular order, are my top 5.

Japan

I’ve always been fascinated with Japan. It looks like an amazing country with such a wide range of scenery, from the lush green mountains to the hurly-burly craziness of Tokyo. I love reading about it, both in fiction and travel writing. Will Ferguson’s Hokkaido Highway Blues: Hitchhiking Japan is a fascinating insight into the country and people.

America
Well, I’ve been to California, on a brilliant holiday where we met some friends in LA, drove to Las Vegas (where I beat the casino – that’s another story), drove up the coast to Monterey then in to Yosemite before ending up in San Francisco, one of my favourite cities. I’d happily go back to SF again, but also want to visit New York, Chicago, Texas – and of course meet up with my Minnesota Posse of Livejournal friends!

China
As with Japan, China is a place I find endlessly fascinating and scoop up everything I come across, from film to books to photography. Me and the kids even started learning chinese!

Canada
My parents moved to Newfoundland for a while before I was born and I’d love to go and visit. Various other family members and friends have also been there on holiday and every person, without exception, have said it was fantastic.

Italy
Ah, a slightly surprising one for the list – but as a coffee geek, I’d love to sup an espresso in Milan, take in the sights of Venice and eat pizza in Rome. In the meantime I’ll have to make do with La Bottega Milanese!

So, those are mine. What’s on your holiday wishlist?

  1. Turkey, Morocco and Nepal are high on my list. I’d love to tour the Silk and Spice roads and criss-cross the Persian Empire. Regional politics make that an unlikely prospect in the immediate future. Good thing I’ve got all of Peru to explore!
